Srilankan Cricket Team attacked in Lahore, Pakistan
Today, 3rd March 2009, Six players in the Sri Lankan Cricket team were wounded, when the bus carrying the Sri Lankan squad was attacked by 12 gunmen, when the bus was escorted by Pakistan Police to Gaddafi stadium in Lahore, Pakistan. This is the first time ever that a Cricket team has been targeted by terrorists. Lahore Police chief Habibur-Rehman said 5 people including Police Commandoes were killed in the attack by the unidentified gunmen, who fired AK 47s, Rocket launchers and hurled grenades. Vaas, Mendis, Samaraweera, Sangakara and Jayawardene were injured. India severely condemned this attack and said that Pakistan must check terrorism severely. Previously, due to Mumbai attack, India Cricket Team abandoned the tour to Pakistan. Today, the Indian and New Zealand team players donned black armbands as a mark of respect to the victims of the attack on Sri lankan team during the Limited Overs International match.
